Headquartered in New Hampshire USA and with a development centre in India, this privately owned startup was founded in 2012 with $20 million initial funding by several serial entrepreneurs with a vision to re-engineer the LTE mobile RAN architecture.
Parallel Wireless products are designed to be of great interest to First Responder organisations (e.g. Fire, Ambulance etc.) because the system can be quickly deployed and automatically integrates with existing LTE coverage. Full support of MOCN allows each organisation to control access through their own core network without the need for dedicated equipment.
Products
The company takes a different approach in two respects:
1) Where the standard LTE RAN architecture removes the need for a 2G BSC or 3G RNC, Parallel Wireless have re-introduced a RAN controller which they term the LTE Access Gateway. This is based on standard COTS hardware and connects to the core network and LTE eNodeB's using standard LTE protocols (S1 and X2), allowing it to connect with any 3GPP compliant LTE eNodeB in addition to the company's own basestations. The Access Gateway includes functions for rapid deployment including SON (Self Organising Networks) and MOCN (Multiple Operator Core Network) and real-time ICIC (Interference Co-ordination). It also reduces the load on core networks through signalling and paging optimisation and virtualisation of the S1 interface. This is particularly important to protect core networks from signalling storms generated by time-synchronised smartphone apps - the gateway mediates to dampen these tidal flows to ensure more consistent and reliable operation.
2) CWS-100 Outdoor Basestation Family. Parallel Wireless offer a range of outdoor LTE Small Cells with both standard Ethenet backhaul and their own direct eNodeB to eNodeB out-of-band signalling connection. Each node can communicate directly with others through a proprietary peer-to-peer protocol which can use licenced or unlicenced bands, avoiding the need for wired backhaul at every site. Nodes automatically configure in a mesh arrangement, re-routing in case of any outage or capacity limits. The Converged Wireless System (CWS) product range includes different form factors for rural, urban and in-vehicle deployable. The eNodeBs is self configured and self-managed through the LTE Access Controller.
