VIAVI (NASDAQ:VIAV) was formed when JDSU spilt off their optical network business into Lumentum and renamed itself VIAVI in 2016. Its origins date back to Wandel and Golternmann founded in Europe in 1923.
Now headquarted in California, USA this global company has around 3,000 employees and a turnover around $900 million (June 2016). The company provide solutions for network planning, testing and service assurance. Their customers include telecommunications service providers, cable operators, and network equipment manufacturers worldwide.
Their test equipment includes probes which can be installed at many points throughout the radio access network, reporting and identifying areas of traffic congestion, delays and bottlenecks.
In February 2013, VIAVI launched a comprehensive end-to-end Small Cell Assurance Solution (SCAS) which includes automated provisioning, testing, assurance and optimisation of the backhaul connection.
In March 2013, acquired Arieso for $85 million, a radio performance management company with software tools which can geo-locate RAN data to determine precisely where traffic hotspots are. This allows network operators to target exactly where to deploy small cells for maximum effect, capturing the most traffic and improving coverage.
