ADB

ADB (Advanced Digital Broadcast) is a member of the ADB Group, a publicly traded company based in Switzerland (SIX: ADBN).

ADB designs, manufactures and deploys solutions to distribute pay-TV, multimedia and communication services to the connected home, through any type of network. Originally specialized in digital and IP set top box technologies, with the acquisition of Pirelli Broadband Solutions in November 2010, the company has extended its portfolio into broadband access and convergence applications.

As Pirelli Broadband Solutions, ADB had already developed a femtocell enabled ADSL modem using Airvana’s 3G UMTS femtocell technology. It is believed that ADB Broadband are now working with another femtocell vendor after Airvana withdrew from the UMTS market, although no public announcement has yet been made.

Earlier, an agreement was announced in May 2008 to interwork with Nokia-Siemens femto-gateway.

Currently, both standalone and integrated femtocell products are commercially available.

It allows service providers to address a connected family or SoHo with a device supporting both managed and un-managed applications (Ethernet and WiFi connectivity, Voice, FAX and POS over IP, QoS for IPTV and 3G voice, file sharing and management of external storage devices, shared printer, DLNA and UPnP Digital Media Server) with TR-069 remote manageability.

At the Femtocell World Summit 2009, ADB showcased a convergent TV + mobile use case enabled by its Epicentro software architecture, through which diverse entities such as mobile apps, femtocells, mobile phones, set top boxes and home gateways can communicate via specific APIs, opening to third parties’ apps contributions in a managed environment.

ADB has also tested their solution using Satellite broadband from SES Astra, to bring 3G cellular service to residential areas where other access infrastructures are not economical.

ADB is also a vendor of remote management software systems for operators. Its TR-069 ACS solution is targeted to multi-vendor CPE bases, comprising femtocells and mobile terminals.

In the video interview from June 2010 below, Roberto Pellegrini, Director of Strategy and Innovation at ADB Broadband (Pirelli Broadband Solutions at the time of recording) explains their background in broadband access products and what this means for mass market rollout of integrated femtocells and set-top boxes/broadband modems.
